Privacy

Your privacy.

meaning.today is a small, independently run site. We do not ask for personal information. Analytics normally runs only if you choose to allow it. A temporary measurement test through 20 October 2026 at 12:00 UTC enables analytics by default unless you decline.

What we collect

There are no accounts, comments, forms or newsletters, and no database of readers. Looking up a word does not require you to tell us anything about yourself.

  • Search runs in your browser over a list of words loaded with the page. If JavaScript is off, the search box submits your search as part of the page address, and that address appears in the hosting logs described below.
  • Listen uses your browser’s own text-to-speech. We never receive the audio or the words you play. Depending on your browser and voice, your device or browser vendor may process the text to speak it.
  • Email. If you write to hi@meaning.today, we receive your address and your message and use them to reply. We keep the conversation only as long as it is useful.

Hosting on Cloudflare

The site is served by Cloudflare. To deliver a page and keep the service secure, Cloudflare receives the technical details every web request carries: your IP address, the page requested, the time, your browser and device type, and the referring page. Cloudflare may keep logs of this, whether or not you allow analytics. We use this only to run and protect the site, not to identify or profile individual readers.

Cloudflare acts for us in handling this data and is bound by its own Privacy Policy. Cloudflare says it stores data mainly in the United States and the European Economic Area, and relies on the EU–US Data Privacy Framework and standard contractual clauses for international transfers.

Optional analytics (Google Analytics)

We would like to know which words people find useful. Google Analytics (GA4) is used for that. Normally it starts only after you choose “Allow analytics”. During a temporary diagnostic test ending 20 October 2026 at 12:00 UTC, GA4 may start on arrival unless you previously declined or choose “Decline” in the banner. A decline stops subsequent measurement. After the test, the usual prior opt-in behavior resumes.

If you allow it, Google Analytics receives:

  • the pages you view, the page you came from and what you click or search for on the site,
  • your browser, device, screen and language settings,
  • your approximate location, worked out from your IP address (Google says Analytics does not log or store IP addresses), and
  • a random ID stored in a cookie so repeat visits can be counted together. It is not your name or email address.

We use the results only as totals and trends. Google processes this data for us under its Google Analytics safeguards, which may involve transferring it outside your country, including to the United States. Google keeps detailed event data for the retention period set in our Analytics account; Google’s standard options are 2 or 14 months.

We tell Google that advertising storage, advertising data sharing and ad personalisation are all denied, and the site loads no advertising tags. We do not sell personal information.

Your choices

  • Change your mind any time with the “Analytics settings” button in the footer. Choosing Decline stops measurement and removes the Google Analytics cookies from this site. Data already collected is not undone.
  • Browser controls. You can block or delete cookies and site storage in your browser settings, or install Google’s opt-out browser add-on.
  • Your rights. Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask what we hold about you, or to have it corrected or deleted. Write to hi@meaning.today. We hold almost nothing that identifies a person, and cannot look up analytics data by name, but we will answer. For data in Cloudflare’s or Google’s systems, those companies’ own tools and policies also apply.

During this brief diagnostic test, some visits can be measured before a visitor chooses. To stop further analytics, choose Decline in the banner or in Analytics settings. Hosting logs support the operation and protection of this site.

Other sites and children

Entries link to sources such as Wikipedia and Wiktionary. Those sites have their own privacy practices. The site is not aimed at children and does not ask anyone for personal information.

Changes and questions

If we change what the site collects, we will update this page and its date. Questions: hi@meaning.today. See also the Cookies page.
